Bentley was taken over by Rolls-Royce during the early 30ies having suffered tremendously from the world economic crisis. Within a rather short period Rolls-Royce launched the Bentley3 1/2 Litre, a motor car developed and produced at their Derby factory. The succeeding model, the Bentley 4 1/4 Litre, s of „The Silent Sportscar“ was made at Derby, too, and just prior to the outbreak of World War II they launched the Bentley Makr V. Hence insiders usually speak of „Derby built Bentleys“, when they talk about Bentley motor cars built by Rolls-Royce prior to the outbreak of WWII.
With the publication of „The Derby Built Bentleys“ Bernard L. King had added to his series „Complete Classics“ a volume containing most detailed information plus several hundred mono photos. The first Edition of this book had been sold completely years ago and since then any prospective purchaser was advised “Out of Print”. At least here is the re-vised 2nd Edition offering in-depth information as regards development of Bentley 3 ½ Litre, Bentley 4 ¼ Litre as well as Bentley Mark V and containing many never previously published photos. A hallmark of „Complete Classics“ is that each single car ever built is listed with chassis number, coachbuilder, first owner and – if information was available – present owner or last known owner respectively. Bernard L. King is known to insist on very careful research – and that made all books from his series „Complete Classics“ rank as Standard Reference Books.
